Nvidia Shield K-1 Review

For those of you who were expecting a completely new android tablet from Nvidia, think again. Instead, prepare to find a slightly upgraded version from the tablet they released in 2014. This is the Nvidia Shield K-1 and the developers obviously paid attention to the principle – if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

The original Shield tablet was already considered as one of the best in the market. It was praised for the sleek design, software, hardware and gaming capabilities. More importantly, it was praised for the affordable price range. Believe it or not, Nvidia has gone a little cheaper while upping the specs a little bit, making the Shield K-1 the best within its price range.

The Design

As mentioned before, the K1 was simply meant to be an affordable upgrade, so the only real changes you’ll find in the design are the two rubber sides, which make it easy to hold the tablet in landscape position.

In terms of the screen, you’ve got 8 inches of 1 920 x 1 200p of Full HD resolution. It’s not the best in the world, but it’s definitely among them.

The colors are rich and vibrant while it works for everything you may need a tablet for.

Whether it’s opening websites, playing games or reading a book, you won’t be disappointed.

Nvidia Shield K-1 Specs

When you look beneath the sexy exterior you’ll find a very impressive Tegra K1 chip running at 2.2GHz and 16GB of on-board space. In terms of RAM, there is an adequate 2GB at your disposal. If you don’t feel like playing on the 8 inch screen you can easily hook it up to a TV or monitor through an HDMI port. Just in case you want more space, you can add more thanks to the external memory slot.

These specs are made better by two front-facing speakers along with dual bass reflex ports. In other words, you won’t have any problems with the quality or loudness while watching movies and playing gaNvidia Shield K-1mes. Regarding the front and rear cameras, they come pretty standard at 5MP.

Then there is the game-play capabilities of the Shield K1 that blows competition out of the water. In case you didn’t know, Nvidia is the developer for some of the greatest graphics cards around. If you haven’t heard of GeForce then it’s time, because you can play console level games with ease on this tablet thanks to GeForce technology.

To make things a little more interesting you can buy a wireless remote to play with. It connects through Wi-Fi, so the response time is much quicker compared to Bluetooth, but you don’t necessarily need the remote to enjoy the games.

Why The Lower Price?

This question is on everyone’s lips, because where’s the catch? What did Nvidia do to bring the price down so significantly?

Currently, nobody will be able to tell you. The only “big” difference is the material that was used for the side panels. Where the initial design had a matte finish, the K1 has rubber.

It still feels like a quality tablet and complaining about this would be trivial.

The Pros

It goes without saying that game junkies will go nuts for the Shield K1, because you can connect to a library of games that feature more than 100 titles. The battery power is more than enough, the processor is quick, the screen is perfect for playing on the go and the sound doesn’t disappoint. In fact, everything about this tablet can be considered a pro.

The Cons

This rarely happens, but there is absolutely nothing to complain about. The quality of the tablet is high-end and it comes at an affordable price. It will do everything you want it to and more, which takes it as close to perfection as far as tablets are concerned.

The Bottom Line

At the moment the Nvidia Shield K-1 doesn’t have any real competition. Even though its priority is to keep gamers entertained, it doesn’t lack in the other necessary aspects, such as watching movies or surfing the web. Unless you are very methodical about power and volume buttons, you won’t find anything wrong. If you do then try to get the same quality for the same price.
